Overview
:
This course prepares attendees to participate on Shoreline Cleanup and Assessment Technique (SCAT) field teams, and to direct personnel in similar roles. This course provides attendees with a detailed understanding of the SCAT process. Attendees will participate in field exercises applying the principles of SCAT to a variety of scenarios that cover accessing, describing, and documenting shoreline environments in order to determine the most effective treatment option. This course is offered in series with NEMA Course
EMS 401

Field Activity Review
Field Exercise:
Students will participate in visually assessing nearby coastal environments, reviewing shoreline conditions and evaluating potential complications. A basic application of technology and communications with be utilized in this activity. Final review will take place in the classroom, reviewing SCAT forms, discussing oiling conditions, and determining best treatment options for the impacted areas.

About the Instructor
:
Darrick Turner is an environmental enforcement specialist with Montana’s Department of Environmental Quality where he manages enforcement cases addressing LUST/UST, remediation, solid waste, mining, septage, public water, and water quality violations. Mr. Turner has extensive experience in site characterization, emergency response, remediation, and regulatory compliance assistance including administrative civil enforcement by means of both informal and formal legal activity. Mr. Turner has been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency for his effective investigative and case management practices.
